The dragon-slayer saint was very popular as a patron saint during the Middle Ages. Many Patronages of Saint George exist around the world, including: Malta, Georgia, England, Egypt, Bulgaria, Aragon, Catalonia, Romania, Ethiopia, Greece, India, Iraq, Lebanon, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, Sardinia, Serbia, Macedonia, Ukraine, Russia and Syria, as well as numerous cities, professions and organizations.

A wyvern is a biped legendary creature with a dragon's head and wings, a reptilian body, two legs, and a tail often ending in a diamond- or arrow-shaped tip. The wyvern in its various forms is important to heraldry, frequently appearing as a mascot of schools and athletic teams. It is a popular creature in European and British literature, video games, and modern fantasy.

In early Christian art, Saint George is often depicted with fellow dragon-slayer Saint Theodore. In fact, portrayals of Saint Theodore slaying a dragon predate those of his more famous companion. Before the 11th century, Saint George, an early Christian martyr, was sometimes shown killing a man rather than a dragon.

The dragon (druk) is the symbol of Bhutan. "The kingdom of dragon" is the title of the country anthem, and the king of Bhutan is officially called "The Dragon King".

The red dragon appears in the legend of King Arthur and the Britons. As a symbol of Wales, it was on the Tudor coat of arms. Today it is used as a symbol by many Welsh institutions, companies and sports teams.
