Madrid facts

Egyptians. In 1960, due to the construction of the Great Dam of Aswan and the consequent threat posed to several monuments and archeological sites, UNESCO made an international call to save this rich historical legacy. As a sign of gratitude for the help provided by Spain in saving the temples of Abu Simbel, the Egyptian state donated the temple of Debod to Spain in 1968.

In 1993. When the capital of Spain was transferred from Toledo to Madrid in 1561, the seat of the Church in Spain remained in Toledo and the new capital had no cathedral. Plans to build a cathedral in Madrid were discussed as early as the 16th century, but the cost of expanding and keeping the Empire came first. The construction of the church located just next to the Royal Palace began in 1878 and concluded in 1993.

Estadio de Chamartín. Real Madrid was playing its matches at Estadio de Chamartín until 1946 year. A year after the Nuevo Estadio Chamartín was opened. Next years club's management changed the stadium's name to Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. Every member of club's management agreed to this except the president, but he couldn't change the decision alone

Manzanares. The river Manzanares, although small and relatively unimportant geographically, has had a great historical importance due to its close relation to the city of Madrid. It also featured in many paintings of the late 18th to early 19th-century painter Francisco de Goya, which show traditionally dressed Madrileños in activities like dancing or having picnics next to the river.
