The denarus was a small silver coin of ancient Rome, first minted in 211 BC. Its name still pre­vailed as 'dinar' in many modern coun­tries (Serbia, Iraq, Malaysia etc.), since Islamic dinar comes directly from Byzan­tine di­nar­ius.
