News­pa­per pub­lish­er Joseph Pulitzer gave money in his will to Columbia Uni­ver­si­ty to launch a jour­nal­ism school and es­tab­lish the Prize. The prizes are given annually to award achieve­ments in jour­nal­ism and pho­tog­ra­phy, as well as lit­er­a­ture and history, poetry, music and drama. The first Pulitzer Prizes were awarded in 1917.
