Scrapie is in­fec­tious and in­cur­able. Recent studies suggest prions may be spread through urine and persist in the en­vi­ron­ment for decades. Scrapie occurs in Europe and North America, but to date, Aus­tralia and New Zealand (both major sheep­-pro­duc­ing coun­tries) are scrapie-free.
