The company was founded in 1931 in Kurume, Japan. The name is derived from founder Shojiro Ishibashi's last name, which trans­lates lit­er­al­ly to "stone bridge." In 1988, Bridge­stone pur­chased American Fire­stone Tire and Rubber Company.
