What's the original meaning of the word mammoth?

hairy elephant
underground beast
horned giant
great boar
The word mammoth comes from Siberian mythology, according to which mammoths lived underground, and only became dead when accidentally reaching to the surface. That was to explain occasionally found mammoth frozen bodies in eroding river banks. Chinese merchants, who bought their tusks, brought this believe to their language - thus yǐn shǔ 隐鼠 means "the hidden rodent".
