Im­me­di­ate­ly after the com­mu­nist takeover of South Vietnam in 1975, a pro­vi­sion­al gov­ern­ment renamed the city after Ho Chi Minh. Even today, however, the informal name of Sai Gon remains in daily speech both do­mes­ti­cal­ly and in­ter­na­tion­al­ly.
