Around the 13th century, monks from Sri Lanka in­tro­duced Ther­ava­da Buddhism to South­east Asia. The religion spread and even­tu­al­ly dis­placed Hinduism and Mahayana Buddhism as the popular religion of Angkor. It became the official state relifion in 1295.
