Car­diomy­opa­thy is a con­di­tion in which the heart's muscles get very thick and lose func­tion. Car­diomy­opa­thy is no­to­ri­ous for causing sudden death, es­pe­cial­ly in young ath­letes. Med­i­ca­tions can some­times control it, but in some cases, the patient needs a heart trans­plan­t.
