The name of the plant comes from a Greek myth de­scribed by Homer: The hyacinth flowers grown up from the blood of a youth of this name ac­ci­den­tal­ly killed by the god Apollo. However, the plants have been mistaken since an­tiq­ui­ty. The plant known as hyakinthos in Ancient Greece has been iden­ti­fied as Scilla bifolia.
