Bar­tolomeu Dias orig­i­nal­ly named the Cape of Good Hope the "Cape of Storms" (Cabo das Tor­men­tas). It was later renamed (by King John II of Por­tu­gal) the Cape of Good Hope because it rep­re­sent­ed the opening of a route to the east.
