In 2004, Viktor Yanukovy­ch, then Prime Min­is­ter, was declared the winner of the pres­i­den­tial elec­tion­s, which had been largely rigged. The results caused a public outcry in support of the op­po­si­tion can­di­date, Viktor Yushchenko. Thou­sands of pro­test­ers were demon­strat­ing daily in Kiev, and many general strikes happened through­out the country. The protests suc­ceed­ed when a revote was ordered by Ukraine's Supreme Court and the final results showed a clear victory for Yushchenko.
