The Old Be­liev­ers sep­a­rat­ed from the Russian Orthodox Church in 1666 as a protest against church reforms in­tro­duced by Pa­tri­arch Nikon, in order to achieve uni­for­mi­ty between Russian and Greek Orthodox prac­tices. Many refused the changes which violated old tra­di­tion­s. Even the proper way to make the Sign of the Cross was changed, which later became a symbol of dif­fer­ence between New and Old Be­liev­er­s.
