The won is the currency of South Korea. A single won is divided into 100 jeon, the monetary subunit. The jeon is no longer used for everyday transactions, and appears only in foreign exchange rates. The won is issued by the Bank of Korea, based in the capital city of Seoul.

Soju is a clear, colorless distilled beverage of Korean origin. It is usually consumed neat, and its alcohol content varies from about 16.8% to 53% alcohol by volume (ABV). In 2000s, soju started to dominate the world's spirit market. Jinro soju has been the largest selling spirit in the world for more than a decade.

The so-called "Bridge of No Return" crosses the Military Demarcation Line between North Korea and South Korea. It was used for prisoner exchanges at the end of the Korean War in 1953. The name originates from the final ultimatum that was given to prisoners of war brought to the bridge for repatriation: they could either remain in the country of their captivity or cross the bridge to return to their homeland. However, once they chose to cross the bridge, they would never be allowed to return, even if they later changed their minds.

The Great Korean Empire was proclaimed in October 1897 by Emperor Gojong of the Joseon dynasty. From 1905 onward, Korea became a protectorate of Japan, and in August 1910 the Korean Peninsula was annexed outright by Japan, bringing the Korean Empire and its monarchy to an end and beginning 35 years of Japanese colonial rule in Korea.

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art, characterized by its emphasis on head-height kicks, jumping and spinning kicks, and fast kicking techniques. Taekwondo was developed during the 1940s and 1950s by Korean martial artists with experience in martial arts such as karate, Chinese martial arts, and indigenous Korean martial arts traditions such as Taekkyeon, Subak, and Gwonbeop.

Kim Il-sung gained military and political education in the USSR. During World War II, he served in the Red Army, commanding a division of Koreans. He was undoubtedly the weakest educated leader in the entire Eastern bloc.

The Arch of Reunification is a sculptural arch located south of Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea. It was opened in August 2001 to commemorate Korean reunification proposals put forward by Kim Il-sung.

The name of the sea comes from the yellow color of its waters, caused by large amounts of silt brought by the Yellow River.

When the Japanese took over Korea, the Sea was the East Sea. The Sea of Japan is a self proclaimed name by the Japan, so that the Japanese would get the fishing ground and all the islands that don't belong to them.
