FIFA is responsible for the organization of football's major international tournaments, notably the World Cup. It was created in Paris in 1904. Today the headquarters of FIFA are located in Zürich, Switzerland.

UEFA was founded on 15 June 1954 in Basel, Switzerland. UEFA runs nation and club competitions including the UEFA European Championship, UEFA Nations League, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, and UEFA Super Cup.

Germany saw its first World Cup victory in 1954 in Switzerland. It is known as the Miracle of Bern, as Germany managed to beat the heavily favoured Golden Team of Hungary 3–2. Since then, the team won another three and along with Italy it is the second, after Brazil, most successful national team in World Cup history.

Originally called Speke Airport, in 2001 the airport was renamed after Liverpudlian musician John Lennon of The Beatles.

The AFC Asian Cup is the second oldest continental football championship in the world after Copa América. The most successful team is Japan with 4 titles.

Since 1912, Athletic has played exclusively with players meeting its own criteria to be deemed as Basque, and has been one of the most successful teams in La Liga. This can be seen as a unique case in European football; it has gained Athletic both admirers and critics.

On December 24, 1989, Alfredo di Stefano was awarded a Super Ballon d'Or. To this day, he remains the only player to have received this award. It was an accolade awarded by France Football in recognition of his outstanding career achievements. Johan Cryuff and Michel Platini were shortlisted for this award as well. But Real Madrid's Blond Arrow won the vote and was given this unique distinction.
