UNESCO World Heritage questions

The city is ancient - its largest pyramid, the Pyramid of the Sun, was completed by AD 100. It predates most known cultures of Mesoamerica. The origin of its founders is uncertain, and its original name is also unknown. It housed a population of about 150,000 people, making it one of the largest cities in the world at that time.

Fasil Ghebbi is a fortress-enclosure located in Gondar, Ethiopia. It was built in 1636 by Emperor Fasilidies, who broke with the old tradition of the Ethiopian Emperors to travel around their possessions, living off the produce of the peasants and dwelling in tents. The unique architecture of Fasil Ghebbi shows diverse influences, including Nubian, Arab, and Baroque styles.

Mount Nemrut is a 2,134 m (7,001 ft) high mountain in southeastern Turkey. Near the summit, a number of large statues of Greek and Iranian gods are erected around the royal tomb, which King Antiochus I Theos of Commagene built for himself in 62 BC. The heads of the statues have at some stage been removed from their bodies, and they are now scattered throughout the site.

There are 49 World Heritage sites in Italy; 45 in China, 44 in Spain, 38 in France and in Germany, 32 in Mexico and 30 in India.

A number of pre-Hispanic cities put Mexico in the first place in the Americas and sixth worldwide. There are 33 World Heritage Sites in Mexico, 21 in US, 19 in Brazil and 11 in Peru.

In 1960, due to the construction of the Great Dam of Aswan and the consequent threat posed to several monuments and archeological sites, UNESCO made an international call to save this rich historical legacy. As a sign of gratitude for the help provided by Spain in saving the temples of Abu Simbel, the Egyptian state donated the temple of Debod to Spain in 1968.

The Kingdom of Kush was an ancient kingdom situated south of Egypt, on the confluences of the Blue Nile and White Nile. Approximately 255 pyramids were constructed at three sites (including Meroe listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site) over a period of a few hundred years to serve as tombs for the Kushite kings and queens. These steep pyramids differ from Egyptian ones and were constructed much later.
